Description
DESIGN NOTES:
Essentially, the primary concerns here are the Iron and Manganese, even at low levels these can produce dark stains in toilets, sinks, showers and light colored items in the laundry. Additionally, the presence of Iron in the water supply will make your Hot Water Susceptible to Iron Bacteria which produce the “rotten egg” smell.
Since you’d like this system to remove the Iron but also offer the security of wide spectrum filtration of potential well contamination, we’ll utilize a combination of Reticulated KDF-85 and our Proprietary Catalytic Carbon for this application. The KDF Filtration Media offers great filtration of soluble cation inorganic contaminants (heavy metals, etc.) and the catalytic carbon does a great job with filtration of inorganic contaminants (VOCs, herbicides, pesticides, offensive taste & odors, etc.).
TECHNOLOGY:
The primary mechanism for removing the the Iron and Manganese will be the KDF-85 oxidation reduction potential (ORP). A detailed report on this mechanism is attached for your review. Essential it will convert these soluble ions into insoluble ions that are no longer dissolved in the water. In particulate, undissolved form, the Iron and Manganese will be easily captured by the granular be of catalytic carbon and filter gravel beds. After the manganese/iron particles have built up on the media bed for a while, these captured particles can be backwashed off the granular media bed and down the drain.
The KDF Media will also serve another crucial purpose here. It is highly effective at eliminating bacteria growth, preventing and biofilm from fouling the system. This function will also prevent the growth of Iron Bacteria, so there won’t be a chance for the hydrogen sulfide “rotten egg” smell from developing in the hot water either. A report on this mechanism is also attached.
OPERATION:
At higher levels, the iron and manganese builds up quite quickly and requires backwashing regularly on weekly basis. However, in your case, at the lower levels found in your well, the particles of manganese and iron will not require regular backwashing and in fact, with the larger 14″D x 65″H system, the need for backwashing will be minimal. Around once every 6 months or so would be sufficient or when a slight decrease in water pressure is perceived.
For this reason, we’ve designed the system with a Manual Back-washing Head. Just turn the lever on top and water flow will be reversed through the system sending the sediment and the iron/manganese particulate down the drain. This feature replaces the need for a pre-sediment filter as well, so there won’t be any filters to replace regularly on this system. Additionally it will reduce water waste down to almost nothing when compared to an automated backwashing head and the design will be an electricity free system.
